What “no income tax” does and does not mean
States without wage income tax can increase net pay relative to high-tax states at the same gross salary, but they still fund government services through other mechanisms such as sales, property, or excise taxes.
You should evaluate total monthly surplus after housing and recurring bills, not only the absence of state wage tax.
How to compare states fairly
Run identical gross pay through each state’s calculator, then adjust for local taxes if relevant. If you have remote work across states, withholding rules may differ from simple residency comparisons.
Remember that moving expenses and residency dates affect which rules apply in a given year.
