Gross salary is not a full description of pay
Filing status, dependents, and W-4 elections change federal withholding. State elections and local taxes add more variation. Benefits and garnishments can further diverge net pay.
Even with identical gross, two employees might choose different 401(k) rates, insurance tiers, or HSA contributions.
How to compare compensation fairly
Ask for total rewards context: employer-paid premiums, retirement match, PTO, and bonuses. Net pay alone can mis-rank two packages.
If you are negotiating, align assumptions before comparing offers.
